Any government program is going to have scrutiny associated with it.
As residents, our expectation is that the program will be efficient, cost effective, have high quality people working for it, be courteous, if not deferential, to the constituents it serves. Oh, and get the job done.
Of course, some offices are under more scrutiny than others, such as the City of Chesapeake’s Treasurer’s office, responsible for all of the City’s receivables.
Reliance has been proud to support Barbara Carraway, Chesapeake’s City Treasurer, and her staff’s ongoing effort to do the work of the community.
“Reliance is the agency that the city uses,” said Carraway. “I like using the agency because you get to see an employee firsthand and observe what their work habits are, how strong a work ethic they have, and if they’re a good fit for the office. This gives us an opportunity to see these elements in practice before we bring the person onboard.”
In this case, the city brought onboard Theo Briscoe, a talented customer service representative looking for the opportunity to demonstrate his skills.
“I was laid off from my previous job for having a heat stroke,” Briscoe told us. “I walked in the Reliance door seeking to get a more professional occupation than where I was at and I met my placement specialist, Margie, and she was able to help me right away.”
Margie Minnix, a senior placement specialist with Reliance and liaison to the Treasurer’s office, was able to help Briscoe find his new niche.
“Theo came into the office immediately ready to take on new challenges,” said Minnix. “He’s a skilled professional with excellent customer service skills. He knew what he was looking for and has a fun, upbeat personality. I knew he’d do well.”
Briscoe took that enthusiasm to the city and has performed exceptionally well, using some tried-and-true principles.
“My advice to anyone wanting to use Reliance is to show up on time (which means at least ten minutes early), dress for the job you want, not necessarily the job you have, mind your ‘p’s and q’s’, and smile!” he said.
He also said that when searching for a job to be sure to emphasize experiences; those will matter to your potential new employer.
That said, having a permanent job has made Briscoe a lot more confident about his own future.
“Having a permanent job brings peace of mind,” he said. “I’m not having to worry about the number of hours I need, I know that my situation is not temporary or that if I walk into work that this could be my last day. I know that I am here permanently, provided I continue to do a good job.”
Since joining the City of Chesapeake, Briscoe has been an advocate for Reliance, saying that the agency can help candidates find jobs that are more aligned with their skills and motivations.
“Take the ten minutes and go visit Reliance,” he said. It’s definitely worth it.”
Briscoe has been with the Treasurer’s office since this summer where their mission is to be “dedicated to serving our citizens in a professional, efficient and courteous manner, being sensitive to their needs, with a commitment to exceeding their expectations.”
