Shanishia Cropper used Reliance Staffing and Recruiting as a stepping stone for her career. She moved from Newport News to Suffolk in 2016 and is now, at the age of 22, a customer service representative with Quality Custom Distribution (QCD). She is working on her degree through Thomas Nelson Community College.
Cropper, who definitely possesses optimism and energy, also projects professionalism and capability.
Having had to pass a background check and demonstrate a qualifying knowledge of Microsoft Office, Cropper decided to use Reliance not just because of word of mouth recommendations from friends and family, but also because Reliance was able to get her working quickly.
“I went to the office and had a day assignment doing the secret shopper which was a lot of fun,” she said. “That position was able to help me get familiar with the area around Suffolk and I enjoyed that. The next week, I got a call for my current job and was like, ‘Wow! Reliance is amazing!’ Their ability to find a position for me was super fast and I wasn’t expecting it to be that soon at all!”
But Cropper still had to be able to do the job.
At QCD, Cropper works with customers on a daily basis via email and phone calls. She processes orders, working in conjunction with the transportation department and warehouse. Specifically, QCD is looking to ensure they are providing the customer the right product on time.
“We’re pretty straightforward,” said Angela Artis, Director of Customer Service for QCD. “Orders come in and we want to make sure that we are invoicing them correctly, that we are sending them what they ask for, and it’s getting to them on time.”
And Shanishia has excelled at her new work.
“Shanishia has provided great value to the company because of her willingness to learn and caught on so quickly. I rely on her for a lot of different things. Every day, when there is something different, she is willing to jump in and help out.”
Cropper also took advantage of an opportunity with QCD and made the most of it.
“Shanishia was the calm after the storm,” Artis explained. “She came in as a temp after one of our employees was facing brain surgery and we didn’t know long how that employee was going to be out. We had to have somebody in that position and Shanishia was brought in. When that employee returned, an employee in another department departed and Shanishia was able to transition very easily into that specialty. She is one of the few people in our company who can run both sides of our distribution concepts.”
Cropper was chosen for the job in part because of her résumé and familiarity with the job description.
“I definitely think it’s important to keep updating your résumé,” she said.
But qualifications and experience, while important to QCD, are not the final step. Artis explained that while they look at the skill-set coming in, and it’s important, they also have a training process. For them, it’s about motivation and attitude too.
“We can tell pretty quickly whether or not somebody is a fit,” she said. “We’re looking for a well-rounded person who can pay attention to detail and can think outside the box. Accuracy is a big deal for us.”
“We have a long history with Reliance,” said Artis. “We feel very comfortable reaching out to them when we need new hires.”
Michaela Downes is the placement specialist for Reliance who works with QCD.
“By working with a client as closely as we do with QCD, we learn their needs and begin to get very familiar with the type of associate they’re looking for,” said Downes. “In many respects, we think we’re part of their company too – helping them find the best associates for the jobs that they need to be filled.”
In addition to pursuing her degree, Cropper now has more time for two of her loves: the beach and her family. She also has a great appreciation for the Reliance team in Suffolk.
“They were super nice and very excited for me. I definitely appreciate them!”
Now, Shanishia has a career she enjoys, complete with learning skills and working with a community of friends.
“There may be a situation that is new to me, but we all work together to figure it out. This job has definitely made me feel at home. It’s like another family.”
And how is Shanishia performing?
“She is just an awesome employee and a joy to work with,” said Artis.Share this Post
