Dan Bonnell came to Reliance Staffing & Recruiting looking for a way to pay some bills after the costs of going to college full time began to catch up with him. Now he has a full-time job and a great career.
Bonnell began his career search with Reliance because he had seen other people receive job opportunities through us, but also because he kept running into roadblocks. During his job search, he discovered that his own work experience wasn’t being seen by the companies as qualifying experience.
“It was kind of hard to find a job,” said Bonnell. “I didn’t have too much experience – well, I did, but I didn’t – nothing that would cause [employers] to say, ‘Oh, you have this experience!’”
At Reliance, we looked into detail at Bonnell’s work history and found the skill sets he had but we also put him through a battery of skills testing to further refine the search.
Through a little bit of time investment, we were able to rapidly determine the type of position that suited Bonnell.
“It was kind of like an ‘in-and-out’ for me,” he said. “I went in, took the tests to determine what I could do, and [my job coordinator] called me just a few days later and said, ‘Hey, this place seems like it would be good for you.’”
“This place” has been S&S Precision, where Bonnell started with Reliance and has been working ever since.
Yet, when Bonnell first started there, we made sure his needs were being addressed.
“[Reliance] called and checked in on me and asked me how things were going, if I still liked it, and if I was getting paid right,” he said.
As a matter of fact, that proactive approach paid off for Bonnell. A pay concern was discovered with his bank and we offered him an alternative solution.S&S Precision has been very pleased to have Bonnell on their team. As a thermo-forming technician, he does a lot of hands-on work with small tools on projects that are technical and specific. His job requires attention to detail and the ability to take direction.
“Dan learns everything really quickly, he always stays busy. When he finishes one task he already has his next one planned out so there’s no downtime in between,” said Derek Zydanowicz, production manager at S&S Precision and Bonnell’s supervisor. “If he is going to run out of things to do, he lets me know ahead of time so that it’s not ‘Oh, I’m done with the task, now I’m going to twiddle my thumbs, and then let somebody know.’ With Dan, it’s always, ‘Hey, in two hours I’m going to be done with this, so what do you want me to do next?’ He’s just been able to pick everything up that we’ve thrown at him without an issue; he’s learned a lot and not just in the area where he primarily works. He’s worked in a few other areas and picked it up really well.”
Zydanwicz also emphasized that Bonnell has been receptive to training.
“Dan is able to learn from people who have done it before who say, “Hey, it works best if you do it this way,” he said. “Being able to be trainable and teachable really helps.”
Bonnell also has been able to demonstrate a proficiency at using computers and graphics programs.
Reliance has a long relationship with S&S Precision, helping them find several employees.
“I work closely with Kim Keiser [Reliance’s Virginia Beach Branch Manager] and she understands the unique culture that is S&S Precision, so, she doesn’t just throw a body at me,” said Emilee Smith, S&S Precision’s liaison to Reliance. “She picks candidates who she feels are going to be a great fit for us and she proved that with Dan.”
And Zydanwicz added that the skills testing Reliance administers can really pay dividends for an applicant.
“I definitely recommend that a candidate come in and take the assessments – take all the tests they can – and then listen to the placement specialists,” he said. “Even if [the job recommendation] is something out of their comfort zone or something they’ve never done before.”
“It’s really cool that you might have a resume for past jobs, but you might find you’re a good fit for something you haven’t tried yet. You can come in and find out from Reliance, ‘Hey, your skills set matches up with this position!’”
For Bonnell, he is very glad that he came into Reliance and is pleased with the results: he has been able to catch-up with and maintain his bills and now has goals for going back to school soon to finish-up his degree.
“I would suggest using Reliance. It’s a lot harder going out on your own trying to find something,” he said. “I wasn’t really prepared and they helped me do everything from tailoring my resume to ensuring I took the skills testing for this job. The assistance at Reliance was always good.”
