Virginia Beach, VA, January 27, 2014—Sheila “Sam” Morton, PHR, CSP has been inducted as president of the Hampton Roads Society for Human Resources Management (HRSHRM). A senior executive recruiter with Reliance Staffing & Recruiting, Ms. Morton has served on the board of HRSHRM since 2009.
Founded in 1947, SHRM is the world’s largest association devoted to human resource management, with more than 250,000 members in more than 140 countries. The Hampton Roads chapter of SHRM was founded more than 30 years ago; its 500-plus members are all hiring professionals, and collectively they represent more than 300 companies.
Proven Expertise in Human Resources and Recruiting
The role of president is a natural fit for Ms. Morton, who has 18 years of experience in recruiting, searching and placement of professional job candidates. The “CSP” designation after her name stands for Certified Staffing Professional, an accreditation earned through rigorous testing by the American Staffing Association.
The “PHR” designation after her name stands for “Professional in Human Resources,” a credential Ms. Morton earned from the HR Certification Institute this past December. “I realized that there was something missing from my experience and qualifications to be the best president I could be,” she says. “In the fall of 2013, I began taking classes at Old Dominion University to get my PHR certification. This certification would prove valuable for both my role as president and also my role with Reliance Staffing & Recruiting. Passing the certification test in December topped off a wonderful year and gave me the confidence I felt I needed to step into the president role.”
“We have been very lucky to have acquired Sam Morton as our recruiting guru in the accounting and professional employee sector of our business,” says Lynn Connor, vice president of Reliance Staffing & Recruiting. “She has not only brought years of human resource experience to Reliance, but is now also the president of the Hampton Roads chapter of SHRM! We are very proud of this accomplishment and we know we will continue to benefit from her knowledge and skill in our industry.”
Planning for a Great Year
Ms. Morton learned about the role of each board member during her year as president-elect in 2013. “I have a great board to work with this year,” she says, “and I want to provide a forum for each of the board members to be successful in their respective roles. I also want to increase our membership numbers. We currently have over 500 members and I would like to see that increase in 2014. The Hampton Road Chapter has received awards in various initiatives in the past and my plan is to continue that trend. My focus will be on education and ensuring that our monthly meetings continue to provide continued learning opportunities.”
She recognizes that this is a challenging time for human resources as a discipline, and looks forward to meeting those challenges. “There have been so many legal and regulatory changes in human resources in the past few years that will affect employers in Hampton Roads. I enjoy being a part of an organization that I feel provides critical information to employers and future leaders in human resources.”
