While the overall regional employment picture portrayed by the economic indicators would appear challenging, Reliance continues to steadily place associates into positions and clients continue to show a need for staffing.
“It’s clear that the regional economy hasn’t recovered or grown as quickly as some of our neighbors, including Richmond and Raleigh, since the 2008 recession,” said Lynn Connor, owner of Reliance Staffing & Recruiting. “But what we have seen in the staffing industry is a steady demand for associates. And, we’re especially gratified to see several of them transition to a permanent job through our service every month.”
Reliance by the Numbers – September
- Average associates placed per week: 749
- New placement positions: 151
- Associates permanently hired by clients: 20
Hampton Roads Employment Indicators – August
- Unemployment Rate: 4.7% (+0.1)
- Labor Force: 836.1k (-9.5K)
- Employed: 797.1K (-9.7kK)
- Unemployed: 38.9k (+0.2k)
According to the Hampton Roads Planning District in their analysis of the current employment and economic picture, “the region seems to be moving sideways in terms of employment once again. Employment grew more slowly than during an average year, and the region still has not recovered its full prerecession civilian employment (-1.7%).”
The region is still 10,000 jobs shy of the number it had before the recession, while the state and country have already recovered. Jobs have grown by an anemic 2 percent since 2004 while Virginia and the U.S. grew by more than 7 percent. Other southeastern metropolitan areas have done much better – from more than 9 percent in Richmond to nearly 30 percent in Raleigh.
When jobs have opened up, unemployed workers in Hampton Roads weren’t qualified to fill them.
While the unemployment rate has fallen to 4.9 percent in 2015, the number of people who have given up – who aren’t employed and aren’t looking for jobs – has grown.
