Earvin Huggins had a job but wanted a career when he first came to Reliance. And with perseverance and sound decision making, he forged his path to being a shift lead at U-Play USA (a distribution and warehouse center in Virginia Beach).
Applying and Registering
When Huggins applied with Reliance, the application and placement process surprised him because he did not have to pay a fee.
“Reliance’s interview process was a lot different from other temporary agencies,” he said. “Some temp services wanted you to pay money.”
Reliance never charges candidates to pay a fee for applying – no reputable agency will. Our goal is to serve our clients by helping them find the best, most qualified candidates for the open position. And you can’t do that by adding an unnecessary application fee.
Once Huggins registered with Reliance, we set out to find a client match for his career aspirations.
Working With Reliance
“Reliance made it very clear from the start that they were looking to pair me with a job that I could possibly be permanent in; someplace I could make into a career.”
Huggins was not initially placed at U-Play but worked with Reliance staff to find the best job for him.
“It felt very personal. It was not as if you were dealing with a third party.”
He explained that the jobs where he was placed while working with Reliance were chosen because it fit his skills and experience.
“The Virginia Beach office made sure that I was going into a position where I was going to be happy.”
Huggins was with Reliance for several stops. He went permanent hire with another client but due to financial considerations at that company he was laid off; Reliance was able to keep working with him during this transition not only because he is skilled but also because of his positive outlook towards work.
“Professionalism is very important when you’re working for Reliance,” he said. “I try to be as professional as possible no matter what environment I’m in.”
A Career at U-Play
Huggins took the job at U-Play through Reliance for less money than he was looking for because there was an opportunity for advancement.
“I found out that U-Play was a company just getting started,” he said. “I started at ground-level here as a machine operator; then went from machine operator to main operator; main operator to team lead; team lead to shift lead. And, now, as a shift lead, I am responsible for several people.”
And Huggins work at U-Play has been appreciated by their management team.
“Earvin met and exceeded the expectations for the role for which he was hired, which gave him the opportunity to be promoted,” said Bridgette Mason, Human Resources Manager with U-Play. “He was asked to take on the additional responsibility because he displayed excellent leadership skills and he always promoted teamwork among his coworkers.”
Mason went on to say that working with Reliance has helped U-Play with its staffing needs.
“All of the employees we have brought in through Reliance went from temp to permanent hire. Every single last one,” she said. “Reliance has sent us great candidates with the right skill set. The candidates have a good work ethic and are willing to come in and do whatever is necessary.”
She’s particularly grateful for how responsive the Virginia Beach office has been to her requests.
As for Huggins, he feels that there is a lot more stability in his life.
“Financially, I’m doing well; bills are getting paid; and, not only that, for the first time in my life I bought a vehicle that I wanted.”
He advises applicants to exercise patience and allow the process to play out.
“Have an open mind about the positions that are being offered to you because you never know what the next step is from there. Because one thing about Reliance is it’s in the name: ‘Reliance’ – they rely on you so that you can rely on them.”
