Helen Jones represents the ideal employee: one who is dedicated to bringing value to an organization and one who takes pride in representing the business that believes in her.
22 Years of Service
After 22 years of working at a doctor’s office as a medical secretary, Helen found herself needing to find another job.
“I worked at my former job for 22 years and it was devastating to be let go,” Jones said.
An honor’s graduate of Kee Business School in the 1990s, she resumed the job search in earnest but felt overwhelmed; there was a damper on her spirit with how technology impacted the process.
“I know how to use the computer to do my work, but I had to get acclimated as to what not to touch and what not to click when doing my online job applications!”
It racked her nerves thinking that she was alone in the process.
Nevertheless, Jones found work quickly working as a temporary admin through another placement agency. However, it was clear to her that the position would never result in being hired full-time. Besides, it was also not in the career field she loved: medical.
“I said ‘this is not for me.’ They had no intentions of making me permanent and I felt like I couldn’t stay there and needed to leave.”
After browsing the internet for opportunities, Jones came across Reliance Staffing & Recruiting and decided to give us a try.
Finding a Job With Reliance
While she applied and registered with us, there were no immediate openings at a medical office. Then, after continuing to call in and let us know that she was available, our specialist Micheala Peace ultimately informed Jones that we had an interview arranged for her at Suffolk Surgical Associates, LLC.
“Michaela is just a very sweet person with a warm personality,” Jones said of Peace. “She wants the associates to succeed.”
But the timing of Jones’ initial interview with Suffolk Surgical couldn’t have been worse.
“Just after setting up the interview, we discovered that my husband had some cardiac issues and he had to go to the hospital to have a stint put in the day of the interview,” she said.
Jones called Suffolk Surgical to inform them of the medical concern and, not surprisingly, the interview was delayed at the insistence of Dr. Paul Hogg, the surgeon who practices at the office.
That said, Reliance worked closely with Suffolk Surgical to find them the precise person with the qualifications they were looking for.
“Reliance made our job of finding an employee super easy,” said Ashley Hogg, Jones’ supervisor. “The placement specialist was able to provide us with a couple of resumes to look over very quickly. And Helen was the first and only person we interviewed.”
A Good Fit
Peace thought that Jones would be a good fit at Suffolk Surgical and it certainly turned out that way.
“The greeting that I got was very welcoming,” said Jones. “I felt that it was really nice – they were really excited to see me! [The vibe they gave off was that] ‘This is the person we’re looking for!’”
And her intuition was accurate.
“Immediately we felt that Helen would be a great fit for us,” explained Hogg. “She was professional, courteous and organized from the get-go. Helen learned our computer system and office protocol quickly and felt confident enough to offer some advice for efficiency along the way!”
Jones, through her training and experience, knew how to hit the ground running with very little oversight and took immediate proactive measures regarding office administration and patient privacy.
Her job includes receiving patients, accurately documenting demographic information, processing insurance cards, making appointments, creating medical orders, receiving and sending medical records, and much more.
Because of her initiative, Suffolk Surgical has committed to her and she is committed to them.
“This job has been really, really good from the moment I walked through the door.”
Loving Her Job
Being the friendly face at the front of a doctor’s office sets the right tone and atmosphere.
“I have to have a warm personality because, with some of the patients, they are very apprehensive and have questions regarding the medical process,” explained Jones. “Some patients want to know what the doctor is going to do, so I try to bring them comfort and reassurance. I’m not the doctor but I do try to reassure them.”
And while experienced, she is always looking to learn more. She said that this position affords her the opportunity to learn new terminologies and important questions to ask patients.
Jones is very happy to be at a small medical practice where she has a lot of autonomy and can directly report to the doctor.
“There is nothing that I can’t ask them that they won’t try to help me with and there’s nothing that they can’t come to me about.”
And Hogg agrees. “Helen is a pleasure to work with and takes her responsibility seriously. “
Jones is also very appreciative of the open communications and flexibility the job offers, allowing her the job security and stability she was looking for, as well as the freedom to spend time with family.
“The hours are great; they’re fantastic. We do things on the weekend and we have a grandson who takes up a lot of our time.”
Recommendation to Others
Jones feels that in today’s employment environment that using a service from a company like Reliance is a good idea and that utilizing workforce development centers also helps.
But for her, it was also a matter of faith.
“I asked God to prepare me for wherever He wanted me to be. I trusted Him and I am here now.”
“It feels like a home,” she said. “There is a great deal of respect here and the feeling is mutual.”
